Hey Fam!
I am often asked what the difference between Tirzepatide and Semiglutide are, and how I chose which one was right for me.

Let’s break down what makes these medications unique and how they work.
What is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide/Zepbound)?
Mounjaro, also known as Tirzepatide, is a new medication that’s making waves for its dual action:
GLP-1 Receptor Agonist:
Increases insulin secretion.
Decreases glucagon release (which helps lower blood sugar).
Slows down stomach emptying, making you feel full longer and eat less.
GIP Receptor Agonist:
Enhances the insulin effect even more.
May help with fat metabolism and weight loss.
Why is this important? By targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, Mounjaro offers powerful blood sugar control and helps with weight loss more effectively than medications targeting only one receptor.
Expected Weight Loss: In clinical studies, Mounjaro has shown impressive weight loss results. Participants have experienced up to a 22.5% reduction in body weight, which is significantly higher than many other weight loss medications.
What is Ozempic (Semaglutide/Wegovy)?
Ozempic, also known as Semaglutide, focuses on one main target:
GLP-1 Receptor Agonist:
Increases insulin release.
Reduces glucagon levels.
Slows stomach emptying, reducing appetite and aiding weight loss.
Why is this important? Ozempic is highly effective at managing blood sugar levels and also offers significant weight loss benefits. Plus, it has been shown to reduce the risk of major heart issues in people with type 2 diabetes.
Expected Weight Loss: Studies have shown that Ozempic can lead to a weight loss of about 15% of body weight, which is substantial and beneficial for many people struggling with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Key Differences
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide):
Dual Action: Targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.
Benefits: Greater blood sugar control and weight loss potential.
Weight Loss: Up to 22.5% reduction in body weight.
Ozempic (Semaglutide):
Single Action: Targets GLP-1 receptors.
Benefits: Effective blood sugar management, significant weight loss, and proven heart health benefits.
Weight Loss: About 15% reduction in body weight.
Choosing between Mounjaro and Ozempic depends on your specific health needs. I had done so much research before starting a GLP1 medication and I knew if I was going to spend the money on these medications, I wanted to do the medication that gave me the highest percentage of weight loss - so I chose Tirzepatide. My doctor gave me a choice between semiglutide and tirzepatide, and for me - it wasn't even a question that I was going to go with Tirzepatide.
If you are already on Ozempic/Wegovy/Semiglutide and are having success, that is great, you do not need to switch for better results. However, if you are on a semiglutide-based GLP1 and are not having the weight loss success you hoped for, it may be worth speaking to your doctor about Tirzepatide.
Of course, always consult with your healthcare provider to determine which medication is best for you.
If this information has been helpful for you - be sure to leave some feedback, so I know what to write about in the future.
xoxo,
Jasmine
